Army Wrestling Wins Star on its Home Mat

Army West Point Wrestling accomplished its mission of winning the Star on its home mat at Christl Arena on Sunday afternoon.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Wrestling accomplished its mission of winning the Star on its home mat at Christl Arena on Sunday afternoon. 

The Black Knights won seven of the 10 bouts Sunday evening at Christl Arena to secure a 22-10 dual win over Navy, and sung second.

The match was part of the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA. 

Army improved to 7-3 in 2024-25 dual matches, and 4-2 against EIWA opponents. The Black Knights won the wrestling Star for the second season in a row. Class of 1972 Head Coach Kevin Ward improved to 7-4 against the Midshipmen across his West Point tenure.

Only two bonus point wins were scored Sunday, with each team earning one.

Charles Farmer opened the dual with a tone-setting, 14-2 major decision at 125 lbs.

In the following bout at 133 lbs, Ethan Berginc secured a late takedown to extend his individual match winning streak over Navy with a 5-0 decision, to give Army an early 7-0 dual lead.

At 149 lbs, Trae McDaniel pulled ahead in the bout's final moments to win by decision. Coming out of the mid-dual intermission with a 10-7 team lead, Gunner Filipowicz displayed a full-period ride and scored an escape to win at 165 lbs, 2-0.

Army won the final three bouts of the evening, securing the dual win ahead of the heavyweight match. Jakob Gilfoil rode out the third period in its entirety to win at 184 lbs, 2-0. Wolfgang Frable then scored a takedown in the waning moments of the 197 lb bout to clinch the dual win with a 7-2 decision. 

In Sunday's final bout, Lucas Stoddard won at 285 lbs with a decisive escape point.
