WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point golf team secured the Star with a 7-4 victory at the West Point Golf Course on Saturday as the Black Knights won four of the seven singles matches.
Saturday's Star victory is part of the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA.
The Black Knights have now won the Star three years in a row and seven of the last eight seasons. After getting out to a 3-1 lead after the four-ball matches, Army was able to hold off a late charge by the Mids and earn the 7-4 win.
Drew Jeffords got Army its first point of Saturday with a 5&3 victory and led throughout his match, while John Heckel Jr. continued his amazing play with a dominant performance, winning 8&6.
Navy was able to get a couple of points back with Chip Deegan defeating Tyson Sparks, 4&2, and Owen Huntington winning his match over Rob Ferris at 6&5.
So with the match still hanging in the balance and Army leading 5-3, Josh Kim won his match on the 18th hole with a birdie putt to clinch the match for the Black Knights with a 1-up victory.
Lake Kim was also in the lead late in his match and won 3&1 on the 17th hole to give Army its seventh point of the contest. He led throughout his match as well.
Ben Valdez won the final match of the day with a 1-up victory over Dragon Theam.
