ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Army West Point men's tennis team will travel to Annapolis to face service-academy rival Navy on Saturday at 1 p.m. in their final regular season match of the year.
Beyond the traditional Star Match bragging rights for the programs, Navy holds a two-win lead over Army in the 2017-18 Star Series, presented by USAA, with just the men's tennis and baseball Stars still to be determined. A win by either Navy team would give the Mids the Star Series victory. Also, the winner of the match will likely be the No. 1 seed and the loser the No. 2 seed in next week's Patriot League Tournament. Army and Navy have met in the league tournament in each of the last six seasons, with each of the last four tournament meetings occurring in the championship match.
The winner of the Star Match has gone on to win the Patriot League Tournament contest just twice in the last six seasons (2012, 2014).
Both Navy and Army have tallied league wins over Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Loyola, with the Mids also defeating Colgate, a team the Black Knights did not face. The teams had opposite results against Boston U. as the Black Knights defeated the Terriers (4-1) and the Mids lost to them (4-3).
Last year saw Navy post a 4-1 victory over Army in the Star Match that was played in West Point and the Black Knights defeated the Mids, 4-2, in the championship match of the league tournament that was played in Annapolis.
The three doubles matches will be played first on Saturday, with the six singles matches to follow. The team winning the doubles point has won the overall match in 29 of the last 36 meetings (80.5%).
Navy holds a 62-38 advantage in the all-time series with Army, a mark that includes a 30-14 edge in matches played in Annapolis. The Mids also lead the Black Knights in Star Matches by an overall count of 51-30 and a 27-13 advantage in Star Matches played in Annapolis.
