Army-Navy Star on the Line for Volleyball

The Army West Point and Navy volleyball teams will renew their rivalry Saturday night when the Midshipmen travel to West Point for an Army-Navy showdown. This will be the sixth Star up for grabs in the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA.

ARMY (11-8, 4-2 Patriot League)

  • Army picked up two three-set victories last weekend with a home win against Colgate Friday night and a road win Sunday at Holy Cross.
  • The Cadets are currently fourth in the league and will face Lehigh on the road Friday before hosting Navy at Gillis Field House Saturday.
  • The Black Knights top the league in several categories including service aces (1.51 per set) and kills (12.91 per set). The Cadets rank second in assists (12.91 per set) and are third in hitting percentage (.251).
  • Ana Oglivie tops the league in service aces per set with 0.41.
  • Carolyn Bockrath ranks second in hitting percentage (.388).

NAVY (17-3, 7-0 Patriot League)

  • The Midshipmen have yet to drop a game in league play as they sit atop the rankings with a 7-0 mark and are 17-3 overall.
  • Navy boasts a league-best 12.93 assists per set average and is second in digs (17.29), blocks (2.30 per set), kills (13.76 per set) and hitting percentage (.255).
  • Tara Dotzauer leads the way with 2.82 kills per set and is followed by Maggie Phillips who averages 2.81.
  • Katie Patrick posts 1.26 blocks per set.

THE RIVALRY

  • The home team has won the last four Star Matches, with the Black Knights winning in West Point in 2013 (25-17, 25-14, 25-18) and 2015 (25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13) and the Mids winning in Annapolis in 2014 (27-25, 27-25, 28-26) and 2016 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16).
  • The road team has won the non-Star Match in 2014 (Navy) and 2015 (Army). Additionally, each of the last two matches played at West Point have been extended into five sets (both won by Army).
  • Over half (15) of the 29 sets played between the teams over the last four years (eight matches) have been decided by five or fewer points, including 14 of the 23 sets played over the last three seasons (six matches).
