Navy Sweeps Army for Outdoor Track and Field Stars

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's and women's track and field teams swept Army in the annual Outdoor Star Meet in part of the Star Series presented by USAA Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy's Ingram Field.

MEN'S FINAL: Navy 108 - Army 95
WOMEN'S FINAL: Navy 105 - Army 98

The men's victory was the Midshipmen's sixth straight outdoor track and field win, while the women's was the squad's third consecutive.

The men's meet was close with both team trading leads back and forth throughout the day. After the first three events of the day, Army held a 17-16 advantage, but three events later and Navy had regained a 36-30 lead. The Black Knights led 49-47 until the Midshipmen claimed top points in the triple jump to take back a 55-52 edge. The Mids extended their advantage to as many as nine points, 80-71, before the Black Knights responded to pull to within four at 83-79. From there, Navy used first place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles, 200m dash and the 5,000m run to pull away and secure the win.

On the women's side, it was another tight one the entire way through. After five events, the two teams were tied 26-26. The Black Knights took a 39-35 lead before the Mids responded in the next event to take a 43-42 lead. Navy was able to extended its lead to a degree, but were never able to put Army away for good.

The two victories now gives Navy an 11-9 edge in the 2016-17 Star Series presented by USAA. The academies will face off in women's tennis next Saturday at West Point. The Midshipmen need just one more Star to clinch this year's series, while the Black Knights must win to stay alive.
