ABOUT THE MIDSHIPMEN
Three Mids reached double digits during their last outing against Lehigh to spark Navy's four-straight victory. Sophomore George Kiernan recorded a game-high 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Mids. Hasan Abdullah and Shawn Anderson chipped in 14 and 11 points each, respectively. Abdullah added a game-high seven assists, while Edward Alade, Evan Wieck and Kiernan notched one block apiece. Navy shot 54 percent from the floor and 47.8 percent from long range during the game.
Leading the team overall is Anderson, who is averaging 11.4 points per contest. Kiernan is posting 9.4 points per outing, while Tom Lacey is averaging 8.0 points. Lacey leads the Mids and is fourth in the conference with 7.0 rebounds per game, while Abdullah is second in the league with 2.1 steals per contest.
LAST TIME OUT
Army dropped a tough 85-76 decision on Wednesday night to Holy Cross. The Black Knights held a 45-35 edge at the break but saw their visitor outscore them 50-31 in the second period to steal the win. Holy Cross' 50 points in the second frame was a season high for the Crusaders in any half this season. It was also tied for the most points allowed by the Cadets in a half as they gave up 50 points to Air Force on Dec. 7 as well.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jacob Kessler and Jordan Fox handed Army its largest lead of the game, 56-39, with 16:56 remaining. Unfortunately, the Crusaders used an 11-0 run to pull within 56-50 over the next three minutes. The Black Knights again pushed their edge to 60-50 with 13 minutes to play, but another big 26-10 rally for Holy Cross over a 10-minute span handed the visitors their first lead of the game at 76-70. Army was never able to recover in the final three-and-a-half minutes of action.
Senior Mac Hoffman posted a career-best 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor. He added 2-of-4 makes at the free throw line and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Also reaching double digits was Luke Morrison (14 points), Fox (11 points) and Kessler (10 points). Rookie Tommy Funk handed out a career-high 12 assists, while Fox was two shy of matching his career best with eight helpers.
Sophomore George Kiernan scored a career-high 18 points with six rebounds as Navy rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat Lehigh, 75-72, on Wednesday evening. Kiernan scored eight points and junior guard Shawn Anderson scored six during a critical 21-3 run that lasted nine minutes and turned a nine-point Navy deficit (58-49) to a nine-point Mids advantage (70-61). Anderson scored the go-ahead layup at the 4:47 mark to give Navy a 60-59 lead. Lehigh rallied late in the game to cut Navy's margin to two points at 74-72 with 11 seconds to play, but Bryce Dulin made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to put the Mids ahead by three. Freshman center Evan Wieck blocked Austin Price's potential game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left, and then Price missed another 3-pointer before Anderson grabbed the defensive rebound as time expired.
The game was very even in the first eight minutes with Lehigh leading, 16-14 before Navy reeled off a 9-0 run. Sophomore Ryan Pearson drilled a 3-pointer during the stretch and Wieck made back-to-back layups. Senior guard Tim Abruzzo sandwiched two 3-pointers around an Abdullah trey to give Navy a 10-point lead at 32-22 with four minutes to play in the first half. However, Lehigh would close the first half on an 11-1 run with a Kempton 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to halftime tied at 32-32. Lehigh would push its lead to 11 points on a dunk by Pat Andree at 54-43 with 12:42 to play, before Navy senior James Hemphill scored two buckets inside as the tide turned in Navy's favor ahead of its key 21-3 run.
STARTING FIVE
Of Army's starting five, three are averaging a .450 field goal percentage or higher with Mac Hoffman's .542 leading the way. Four of the five are also averaging more than 3.6 rebounds, while two are handing out 4.3 assists per game.
A WIN OVER NAVY WOULD...
Hand Army its ninth win of the season and earn the Black Knights their second-straight victory over the Mids and fourth in the last 10 meetings. It would also hand the Cadets their third win of the Patriot League season, pulling them to 3-5.
ARMY VS. PATRIOT LEAGUE TEAMS
The Black Knights are 265-380 all-time against current members of the Patriot League. Of the nine other schools in the league, Army has faced Navy (125 times), Colgate (120 times) and Lehigh (105 times) the most. Army leads three series against Patriot League schools in Colgate (61-59), Lehigh (63-42), and Loyola (5-3). The Cadets have also competed against American (11-26), Boston University (8-14), Bucknell (21-52), Holy Cross (21-63), Lafayette (27-44) and Navy (48-77).
EFFICIENCY IS KEY
Strong shooting and the ability to spread the ball around are both keys to Army's success. The Black Knights' 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio is second in the Patriot League, while their 16.5 assists per game and 43.3 field goal percentage rank first and fourth, respectively. With no one truly dominating the ball offensively, it is helping to create open looks for shooters on the outside where the Cadets are first in the conference with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game. That mark also has them tied for 21st in the NCAA.
SOPHOMORE SWAG
Jordan Fox has emerged as a leader for the Black Knights. He currently leads Army and is 14th in the Patriot League averaging 12.7 points per game. What's more impressive though is how he's scoring. The sophomore has converted on 86 of his 188 attempts from the floor. That's good enough for .457 percent shooting. Things don't stop there as Fox is among the leaders in the conference with a .407 mark from behind-the-arc. He is averaging 1.9 treys per outing, which is ninth in the league. In addition to that, Fox is second on the team with a .821 percentage from the charity stripe. The Jackson County, Ky., native is second in the conference with a 2.4 assists-to-turnover ratio, recording 100 assists to just 42 turnovers. And lastly, Fox has posted double figures in 13 of Army's 19 contests.
NEXT UP
Army heads back on the road for a league contest with Boston University on Wednesday. That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip at Case Gym and will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network. The Terriers currently sit with a 10-9 overall record to go along with their 5-2 mark in Patriot League play. Boston U. started conference action 5-0 before suffering its first league losses at the hands of Loyola and Colgate. The Terriers are at Bucknell on Saturday before welcoming Army four days later.
